Fronted by the majestic frontwoman and high priestess of occult rock Jinx Dawson, Coven is regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Their debut album, ‘Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls’, is a landmark in the global rock and metal scene.
🔥🔪🩸 Joining them is the prominent occult metal act Saturday Night Satan, who made waves with the release of their much-discussed debut album, ‘All Things Black’, in 2024.
Coven formed in 1967 in Chicago when drummer Steve Ross joined Jinx Dawson and bassist Oz Osborne (!), who were already together in the band Him, Her and Them. Shortly thereafter they were touring with Jimmy Page and his Yardbirds, as well as Alice Cooper. Just two years later they signed a contract with Mercury Reco, for which they released their first album ‘Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls’, psychedelic rock characterized by a strong focus on occult themes.
The album starts with ‘Black Sabbath’, and ends with the thirteen-minute ‘Satanic Mass’ with the chanting of satanic prayers. The album also features the band’s famous ‘Black Mass’ poster, showing the band making the sign of the horns while preparing for a satanic ritual with Jinx Dawson lying naked on an altar. They soon hit the charts: their cover of the song ‘One Tin Soldier’ was the theme song for 1971 movie ‘Billy Jack’. The band gained attention with an article in ‘Esquire’ titled ‘Evil Lurks in California’, which linked their interest in the occult counterculture to Charles Manson and the murders of Sharon Tate and others. As a result, Mercury Records withdrew the album from sale. Their connection to the seventh art was also evident in the film ‘Heaven Can Help’, in which Jinx played the lead role. He wrote all the music for the film and, in addition to original drummer Steve Ross, new members joined the band for this project. In addition to the debut, the band has released three other albums: ‘Coven’ (1971), ‘Blood on the Snow’ (1974) and ‘Jinx’ (2013).
